Fungi on the genitals are most often representatives of the Candida species , which is a yeast-like, disease-causing microorganism. Among the more than 70 species of candida, the most common species is that of Candida albicans. The Candida albicans species normally inhabits the human body and is found in cavities (oral, vaginal) and the gastrointestinal tract. An overgrowth of candida is called candidiasis. Candidiasis developing in the vagina is called vaginitis.
Among the most common reasons leading to the development of candidiasis are stress, improper diet, excessive use of antibiotics and steroid preparations, a weakened immune system and the transmission of the disease through sexual contact. Certain nutritional supplements can reduce candida symptoms, such as those containing probiotics , garlic , and tea tree oil.
