A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that affects part of the urinary tract. When it affects the lower urinary tract, the disease is known as simple cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), and when it affects the upper urinary tract, it is called pyelonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). Lower urinary tract infection symptoms include painful urination and frequent urination or a frequent urge to urinate (or both), while pyelonephritis symptoms include fever and flank pain in addition to lower urinary tract infection symptoms.
The main cause of both is Escherichia coli, but in rare cases other bacteria, viruses or fungi can also be the cause. Urinary tract infections are more common in women than men, with statistics indicating that half of women experience at least one infection at some point in their lives. In women, urinary tract infections are the most common form of bacterial infection , with 10% developing urinary tract infections annually.
